DOT 49 CFR – MULTI-MODAL – United States Department of Transportation’s regulations for shipping dangerous goods and hazmat materials domestically.

49 CFR is the 49th Code of Federal Regulations published by the United States Department of Transportation (DOT). Its primary goal is the safety of the public and those whose occupations involve handling and transporting hazardous materials to/from or within the US and its territories. To minimize risks, the DOT issued specific shipping requirements categorized into the following four general areas:

  • Hazardous materials identification and classification
  • Hazard communication – e.g. shipping papers, markings, labels, and placards
  • Packaging requirements
  • Operational rules
